Equipment

"The fact is that relatively few photographers ever master their medium. Instead they allow the medium to master them and go on an endless squirrel cage chase from new lens to new paper to new developer to new gadget, never staying with one piece of  equipment long enough to learn its full capacities, becoming lost in a maze of technical information that is of little or no use since they don't know what to do with it."

"Although I travel much, I never tavel light.  Even if I leave the vehicle for a short hike into the forest, I usually carry a heavy camera backpack with about 55lb in it, discounting the weight of the tripod.  I don't want to be caught in a situation where a missing lens causes the loss of a great photographic opportunity."

Equipment Reviews

From time to time, I will write reviews on the equipment that I use for epinions.com.  For those of you who are interested in how these items perform, I invite you over to read the reviews.  If there is something particular that you would like to ask me, feel free to email your question to me.

As you will see below, photographers tend to collect a lot of equipment to capture specific subjects.  This represents my current collection of lenses, bodies, and flash.  These lenses cover a very wide range of focal lengths...from 17-400mm with slight overlaps between many of the lenses.

Obviously, this is a lot of equipment to carry into the field.  In order to transport my gear comfortably, I use the Tamrac Expedition 7x photo rucksack.  This is a very large backpack which carries everything that I could need for any number of photographic situations.

As you can see above, even this large bag is completely packed with equipment.  Fortunately, this is a fairly deep bag and allows me to place some of my equipment on top of other equipment.  This is how this bag appears when I am in the field, and it weighs in at around 40lbs.  The design of this bag is very good which allows the weight to be distributed extremely well.

Below, I have removed some of the items allowing you to view what lies beneath.  The external pockes have been emptied as well so you can see the filters and other odds and ends that are found in the external compartments.  There is still more equipment tucked into the lid compartments which have been left stored.

Here you see the Canon Image PROGRAF iPF5000 large format printer.  This rather large piece of equipment allows me to print gallery quality photographs at a very large size in both color and in black and white.  Inks are Canon's LUCIA pigment based inks for long lasting professional results.  All prints are printed on Red River UltraPro Gloss archival papers.
